Digital Producer (Part Time/Seasonal)
NHL
Hey Team 👋
I have a background in data analytics, but I started growing in this “second”, creative career as a podcast producer/editor on shows including The Create Unknown, and many in the B2B SaaS space where they utilize podcasts as content marketing: UI Breakfast Podcast, Slow & Steady, Better Done Than Perfect.
I’m still freelancing, and am passionate about podcasting, YouTube, and data. I currently help out on Startups For the Rest of Us, and on the MicroConf YouTube channel.
And I’m growing my own photography YouTube channel and associated podcast.
I have a hockey channel, and I know my way around YouTube Studio fairly well.
I currently edit in Premiere, Audition, Lightroom, and Photoshop. I’ve used several online AI tools as well, particularly in audio/podcasting.
Here are some pieces of content that show my best work:

Like I shared in my application notes, please don’t think about YouTube as something you can use typical SEO to excel in.
It’s more about Title/Thumbnail/Great Content your audience will watch as long as possible.
The tags hardly matter, if at all these days, the description should be written mainly for a human with a few keywords (descriptions don’t even show on mobile until after you already click on the video AND THEN AGAIN to open the description).
Whoever you hire should already be a fan of Colin and Samir. The manager of this role should be watching them as well.
I would be really excited to get into the analytics here. I think you are absolutely right to hone in on the opportunity for thumbnails, too. They aren’t the worst, but ideally, you should have some of the best hockey thumbnails on YouTube. And Youtube now lets you A/B test three at a time, so I can help get some variations into testing.
You also have incredible access to content, I would imagine. Things I love – the playlist of great regular season games from 2024. The hat trick compilation. That stuff is cool, and something that only you can offer on YouTube (others could potentially scrounge footage, but it would be more tedious for them, and probably violate usage).
This is a super fast, 10m sketch, but instead of this: I would be testing ideas like this: (see thumbs below)
In the first, I realize it shows NHL network graphics, but in thumbnail size, that wording is literally all wasted space, except for the tiny Lightning logo. You should capitalize on the major stats of the deal to call importance to it, and make Jake stand out from the background.
Would love to talk more about this role, it would be an epic step for me, I have a flexible schedule, and I think I can contribute Day 1!
I think $28/hr will be tough to find the person you need.
I can give close to full time hours, if you need, at $45/hr.
Likely 15-20 hrs/wk, if $40/hr.
Thanks,
Dan
